They have similar uses and target the same problem using a similar method, so deciding between the two medications can be tricky, but those of us at Hydralive Therapy ® have compiled information on both drugs to help out with your decision.
Semaglutide
Semaglutide, also known under various brand names, is a diabetes medication that is also used for weight loss.
It is taken once weekly by injection and works by decreasing glucagon, increasing insulin production, and suppressing a person’s appetite. When used alongside a healthy diet and exercise routine, semaglutide can produce some amazing weight loss results. Patients on semaglutide lose an average of 15% of their body mass, or 35 pounds, over a period of three months.
Obesity is known to increase the risk of certain health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, but semaglutide can help to decrease the severity or risk of these issues when they’re already affecting an overweight or obese person.
Possible side effects of semaglutide:
- Fever
- Stomach discomfort and/or bloating
- Heartburn, belching, and/or gas
- Yellow eyes or skin
- Allergic reaction to semaglutide
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Hair loss
- Loss or change in taste
- Low blood sugar
- Inflammation of the pancreas
Tirzepatide
Like semaglutide, tirzepatide is a once-weekly medication that is primarily used to treat diabetes but can also be prescribed for weight loss. This medication slows the body’s digestion of food, thus decreasing appetite and keeping a person feeling full for longer after eating.
Tirzepatide works by suppressing appetite and helping to regulate blood sugar levels by increasing insulin production. On tirzepatide, patients lost an average of 15% to 20% of body mass over 12 weeks, depending on the dosage of the medication.
Tirzepatide is a glucose-dependent medication and works by mimicking the GLP-1 and GIP hormones that are naturally secreted by your intestine after a meal.
These hormones release insulin, which prompts insulin secretion. This sends a message to your brain that you’re fuller faster.
When insulin levels are properly regulated, there is less glucose in the body, meaning there is less sugar available to be converted into fat. This is typically why many diabetes medications cause weight loss.
Possible side effects of Tirzepatide:
- Allergic reaction, including hives and/or itchiness
- Low blood sugar
- Inflammation of the pancreas
- Stomach problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Heartburn
- Hair loss
- Gallbladder problems
Which One is Better for Weight Loss?
While both medications can be significant in aiding weight loss, which one is better entirely depends on the person. Every body is different, so different people will react differently to each medication. Some people will lose more weight on semaglutide, while others will achieve better results on tirzepatide. It is best to talk to a healthcare professional at Hydralive Therapy before deciding which of these weight loss medications to try out.
Both medications work best when accompanied by a healthy diet and exercise routine. If a person doesn’t do either of those, they may not see results that are as good as those who follow a meal plan and exercise often.
Talk with your doctor to find out which medication, diet plan, and exercise routine is best for you.
Be sure to mention any of your current medications and health issues to avoid any interactions or increased risks associated with either drug.
